It feels like I’m coming home

The middle of February can be an interesting time here in North Carolina. You just don’t quite know what to expect. One day it’s pushing 70 degrees, and the next we get a little snow. It definitely keeps training days interesting. I think I went from “naked knees” one day, to full winter gear with a mug of hot tea in my back pocket the very next day! Growing up here, you kind of get used to it. I’m fortunate to have spent the majority of my life in this beautiful state… but I will say the few years I was away made me realize how much truly I love it here. It’s my home. It will always be my home. And anytime I leave for a race, I always look forward to coming home.

Cycling has been a big part of my life for the past 15 years. After an injury forced me out of triathlon, I was invited to ride with some cyclists for fun. One of my earliest exposures was to a local team that eventually developed into Cardinal Classic Cycling. The people I met early in my career laid the foundation for me to remain in this sport for life. It was a privilege to be introduced to cycling in such a positive way. Looking back now, I realize not everyone is as lucky as I was. And although I am forever grateful for all of the opportunities that came afterwards, my first few seasons as a cyclist have always held a special place in my heart. Those beginnings gave me a sport I can now enjoy for life. It gave me friends I will now have for life. And it’s given me memories I will now keep for life. So after going away for a few years, I am thrilled to have the opportunity to return. It feels like I’m coming home.
